How to Use the Colour Black in Interior Design

You’ll notice that the world of design isn’t just by the era anymore. We’re now constantly mixing styles of the pre-millennium with those of the future and blending it all together for a new modern twist on design. One large change is the use of black in design. Today, it has become far more acceptable and extremely trendy to have your home designed with many black accents.

What is the Real Colour of black?

To be fair, black is not even a colour, black is a shade and is known as the absence of light. Only pure black can exist in nature without any light sources as it is by definition the absence of light.  Although some still consider it a colour it simply can't be, because it does not contain any hues within the light spectrum.

Psychology of Black in Design

A long time ago black was only perceived as a negative colour. Some still associate it with death or darkness, but it is also (still) well known as a colour of wisdom.

By creating a barrier between itself and the outside world, it provides comfort while protecting its emotions and feelings and hides its insecurities, vulnerabilities, and lack of confidence. A blackened surface absorbs all colours and is devoid of light. Black conceals, while white reveals.

When we talk about the psychology of design, most of us would safely use black opposite complementary colours by contrast in small portions.

Why Should You Use Black in Interior Design?

Why should you use black in interior design? The right use of it can add character and timeless elegance to a room. Black enhances dimension, colour and shapes, is classy, sophisticated and polished, and lastly adds a dramatic edge to any space!

Top 4 Ways to Use Black in Design

  1. Black Doors

Black doors on the front of a house, and especially the interior act as a stark accent to jazz up and add luxe to builder grade doors. Try painting your inside front door black and watch how it adds balance to any other black decor in the room.

2. Black Walls

Black walls make a perfect canvas for artwork and also make a bold statement. While you wouldn’t paint an entire room black, this would cause it to appear very dark and small, you can paint a singular wall with artwork, or even wooden designs as an accent to the room.

3. Black Accents

When we talk about accents we mean items like black and white artwork, vases, picture frames, wooden beads, and books. Small items such as these can be easily styled alongside neutral furniture, colours or just about anything.  Accents look great on coffee tables, walls, or bookshelves.

4. Black Furniture

This one might seem tricky, but if done right, we can assure you that using black furniture is in style, trendy and modern and will keep your home looking sophisticated for years!  Some ways to use black furniture would be coffee tables, book shelves, bedside tables, or if you’re feeling like a bold statement, alongside bright white countertops, or a white sink,  black cupboards or a vanity would look great in a kitchen or bathroom.
