How to Beautifully Decorate your Table for Christmas

It’s almost that time of the year where everything shines just a little bit brighter. There’s a soft fluffy layer of powdery white snow blanketed on top of everything in sight. People are rushing around, but smiling ear to ear and there's the sound of carols chiming in the background.  It’s Christmas!

The “most wonderful time of the year” for most comes with lots of goodies, great food and of course gathering safely with your loved ones around. This means  shopping has (hopefully) begun and decorating for the big day is just around the corner!

Holiday Table Styles ideas

Now you have one last big decision to make before you get on with your day of holiday

decorating.  How should I design my Christmas table? You may stick to the same tried and true classic colours, or add a modern flare to your designs this year.

Colour Ideas for Christmas Table Settings

Red and gold are classic colours that allow you to keep a warm ambiance in the room and throughout your table. Mixing a dark or bright red tablecloth or chargers with gold candelabras cutlery or even gold Christmas balls will keep the look classic and festive!

Are you a modern designer with a minimalistic space? Looking to keep your holiday table décor fluid throughout? Try white dishware with black and gold accessories.  The neutral colours and splash of gold sparkle is sure to keep your minimalist style in check.

A popular look this year is the rustic Christmas. You can use your wooden tables or nature inspired pieces like burlap or tree trunk coasters to enhance the natural rustic Christmas table look. To give your rustic Christmas table a clean and natural look, use sparkling white, silver and gold décor enhancements.

How to decorate the perfect Christmas table

Now let's get to the fun part, you’ve chosen your table theme, it’s time to start decorating! Begin with a sanitized and clean surface. You'll want to decorate from the inside out, or middle to ends of the table. If you are highlighting the grain of your wooden table as part of your design be sure to show those features and not cover them up!

If you prefer to protect your surface feel free to start with a tablecloth or a basic coloured table runner like white or any neutral.

5 Key elements your Christmas table must have

When putting together your table-besides the dishware’s, there are five core items that will take your table layout from drab to fab!

1. Greenery

Start with Greenery as the base overtop of a natural table or a table runner.  Gently lay out pieces of faux pine trees, eucalyptus or even real evergreen.  Most grocery stores sell pine or evergreen trimmings in their outdoor holiday section. Lay your pieces out in the center of the table- this will be the base of your design !

2. Small Christmas Decorations

Next, gather decorations that match your chosen theme. You can use varying décor items such as miniature trees, nutcrackers, shapely ornaments or classic Christmas balls. Add Small and tall table décor items scattered throughout, remember that less is always more!

3. Candles

A great way to add height to your settings are by incorporating both tall and short candles. Tall gold candlesticks with white candles are always a classic choice that go with any of the colour schemes. You may place two on either end, or three spaced out in the middle. If you have an alternate center focal piece item such as a large vase or fake tree, use one or two on each side and a few small tealights spaced out around the place settings. Be sure to watch how close you are placing candles to any other decorative items, especially the greenery.

4. Chargers

Chargers can come in all different materials, from wood, to plastic and even glass. These are not meant to be used as plates but are known to be a foundation of the table and elevate the ambiance to a more formal dining experience. Match your charger to the theme and mood of your table for a congruent look. Place the charger under your dinner plate and continue to set the table as normal.

5. Linen Napkins

Not only are linen or cloth napkins better for the environment, using them will add the final touch of elegance to your perfect Christmas table.  Fold napkins into a rectangle and tie with a coloured ribbon or a napkin ring. If using a ribbon, insert your silverware and place a small piece of greenery in each bundle. There are many different folds you may use. Find the one that suits your table and your style best.

At the end of the day, the perfect holiday table is the one you make! Don’t be afraid to have fun with it and experiment with different colours, textures and options for décor. This table is the one that will host your family and loved ones- sit back, relax and enjoy the Christmas bliss!
